What is the Homestead credit?
The Maryland Homestead Property Tax Credit limits the increase in taxable assessment used for certain property taxes on an eligible principal residence. It does not freeze the market value of your home or guarantee that your total tax bill will stay the same. State, county and municipal limits can differ.
Start with the property record
- Find the property in the SDAT Real Property Data Search. Confirm the address and account identifier.
- Review the Homestead application status shown on the record. A prior owner’s approval does not establish your eligibility.
- Open the SDAT program page and read the principal-residence and ownership requirements before applying.
Apply online or on paper
Use Maryland OneStop for the online application, or open the official Homestead Tax Credit Eligibility Application PDF below. Follow the current form’s instructions for signatures and submission. Send the application to the state using those instructions, not to Title Smart.
A different credit has a similar name
The Homeowners’ Property Tax Credit is an income-based program with a separate application and filing requirements. Applying for Homestead does not replace that application. Review both programs if you are considering property-tax relief.
